LYO Assembly

LYO Assembly happens in February and runs the entire weekend. The Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) of the North Carolina Synod is open to all youth in grades 6-12. Youth are members by virtue of being a member of any NC Synod ELCA congregation. Every year, Lutheran youth across North Carolina gather in February for an assembly. At LYO Assembly, youth spend time with each other in small groups, singing with the band and growing in faith.

The strength of LYO in North Carolina comes from the youth themselves. The LYO Board (board members are grades 9-12) is always youth-planned and youth-led. As adult leaders we work hard to create an environment that nurtures and grows faith and develops all youth as leaders. For more information or questions about the LYO Board, please contact the LYO Board Advisers Cathryn Hewett and Kai Thurow.

YouthQuake

Another option to consider with Middle Schoolers is YouthQuake. Consider bringing along a middle schooler to “assist” with your 3-5th graders. It’s been a joy to watch them assume their new leadership role for those congregations who have tried this approach.

Outdoor Ministry Programs

As a synod, we are blessed to have two wonderful ELCA Outdoor Ministry Camps right in our backyard – Agapé Kure Beach Ministries and NovusWay Ministries – check out their offerings below for middle-school aged youth!

BYG-er Retreats – Building Youth Groups

Let us help you grow the bonds with the 6th – 8th graders in your group even BYG-er as you play in the woods of Agapé middle-school style! Experience all the fun of a BYG event and more! Groups may take longer hikes, camp at the Outpost, and try out the low-ropes course.

For more information and the current dates of BYG Retreats, check out the Camp Agapé website or contact their program director Christa Hassler

Faith Alive Campfirmation Retreats

Four weekends – seven retreats covering each part of the small catechism + Luther/Reformation History. Experiential learning leaves lasting lessons and builds relationships. Creative worship, crafts, songs, games and a campfire create an experience long remembered. Lutheridge staff provide supervision for campers, sharing their faithful witness. Come alone or with a group. Lessons are geared to middle school, but 5th graders and high school youth are welcome. Adults are encouraged, but not required to attend with their youth. Pastors Mary and Tim Canniff-Kuhn provide leadership for all retreats with involvement from other teachers.

For more information and to register, check out NovusWay’s website!

REMINDER

It is the expectation of the NC Synod that all adults bringing youth to any synodical event would have completed some form of child protection training and have a recent background check on file with their congregation (current within the last three years).

You can use Safe Gatherings (www.safegatherings.com) to provide both the training and background checks. Please plan to complete this training a week prior to any event.   You do not need your congregational log in to do the training. The log in credentials sent to your pastor are for congregational administration only. To start, just click the red “get started” button and click Lutheran, North Carolina and then your congregation should appear when you start typing.

If your congregation uses another system, please submit the form below for certification. Safe Gatherings is not the required system.
