The North Carolina Synod is one of only a handful of synods that offers programs synodically for 3-5th graders. This age is such an important one to get them excited about youth programs! It’s our opportunity to have youth gather with other Lutherans around the state. Our event each year is called YouthQuake and usually happens in October.

Join us this for worship, music, fellowship, devotions and fun as we explore the seven Faith Practices. It’s simply a day to invite these youth into the youth and family ministry program of our synod. High school and college-age youth volunteer to serve as group leaders.
Cost: $20 per person which includes t-shirt, lunch, crafts, music and program.

Outdoor Ministry Programs

As a synod, we are blessed to have two wonderful ELCA Outdoor Ministry Camps right in our backyard – Agapé Kure Beach Ministries and NovusWay Ministries – check out the offerings below for elementary-aged youth!

BYG Retreats – Building Youth Groups

Agapé † Kure Beach Ministries’ goal is to keep your youth group strong and growing by laying a foundation for its future members – the 3rd thru 5th graders at your church!

Bring your elementary age kids to Camp Agapé for BYG, a fun community building camp experience. Because most BYG weekends are made up of groups from several churches, your group will have fun interacting with others during different camp activities like, canoeing, crafts, hiking, etc. While you are here, you and your campers will have:

  • Caring college age counselors who will work with group
leaders and campers to facilitate relationship building
  • Time set aside for group leaders to be with their individual
groups to plan, reflect, or simply be together.
  • A flexible schedule that allows us to modify activities as

For more information and the current dates of BYG Retreats, check out the Camp Agapé website or contact their program director Christa Hassler

It is the expectation of the NC Synod that all adults bringing youth to any synodical event would have completed some form of child protection training and have a recent background check on file with their congregation (current within the last three years).

You can use Safe Gatherings ( to provide both the training and background checks. Please plan to complete this training a week prior to any event.   You do not need your congregational log in to do the training. The log in credentials sent to your pastor are for congregational administration only. To start, just click the red “get started” button and click Lutheran, North Carolina and then your congregation should appear when you start typing.

If your congregation uses another system, please submit the form below for certification. Safe Gatherings is not the required system.
