With help from the Kaelke fund, I was able to join the mission team from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Raleigh, NC on its 2017 trip to Mnene Parish, Zimbabwe. At 16 years old, I was the youngest to make the journey to see our partners and friends of 15 years. In 2002, GSLC began raising money to fund the education of 22 AIDS orphans. Today, our whole congregation is involved in having personal relationships with each of our 44 Mnene kids. In June/July, the mission team took the kids to see Victoria Falls, one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. There, we also got to touch/feed elephants and meet/touch a cheetah. I also got to visit Mnene village and see where the kids (ages ranging from 16-27 now) grew up and went to school. It was a magnificent, new, and worldly experience for me.
